What does this intervention involve?
Background
Preferred over percutaneous biopsy in coagulopathy, significant ascites, or when simultaneous HVPG is desired.
Procedure
Catheter via jugular vein to hepatic vein. Biopsy needle passed through catheter. Duration: 30-45 minutes.
Risks
Transient pain, capsule perforation (rare), arrhythmia, sampling failure.
Recovery
A few hours to one night. Histology results in 1-2 weeks.
Practical information
Local anesthesia. Outpatient procedure (return home the same day).
