What does this intervention involve?

Background

Acute intussusception is a common pediatric emergency (peak 3 months-3 years) where bowel telescopes into itself.

Procedure

Under fluoroscopic/US control, air (pneumatic) or saline (hydrostatic) is insufflated rectally to push back the intussusception. Duration: 15-30 minutes.

Risks

Bowel perforation (rare, <1%), recurrence (5-10%).

Recovery

24-48 hour hospital observation. Surgery if failed/recurrent.

Practical information

Local anesthesia. Outpatient procedure (return home the same day).
