What does this intervention involve?

Background

Symptomatic large-volume ascites in cirrhosis or malignancy.

Procedure

US-guided needle, fluid evacuated. For recurrent ascites, tunneled drain may be placed. Duration: 20-40 minutes.

Risks

Hypotension (rapid large-volume drainage), ascites infection, bowel injury.

Recovery

BP monitoring. Albumin infusion if >5 liters drained.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
