What does this intervention involve?

Background

Placed when anticoagulation is contraindicated in a patient with DVT or PE, or when PE occurs despite adequate anticoagulation.

Procedure

Under local anesthesia, filter deployed in the IVC via femoral/jugular vein under fluoroscopy. Duration: 15-30 minutes.

Risks

Filter migration, IVC thrombosis, venous perforation, filter fracture.

Recovery

Same-day/next-day discharge. Retrieval recommended once anticoagulation can resume.

Practical information

Local anesthesia. Outpatient procedure (return home the same day).
