What does this intervention involve?

Background

Long-term chemotherapy, prolonged parenteral nutrition, repeated blood draws.

Procedure

Under local anesthesia, jugular vein puncture, catheter advanced to SVC, chamber implanted subcutaneously below clavicle. Duration: 30-45 minutes.

Risks

Infection, venous thrombosis, pneumothorax, hematoma, malposition.

Recovery

Verification X-ray. Usable next day. Monthly flushing when not in use.

Practical information

Local anesthesia. Outpatient procedure (return home the same day).
