What does this intervention involve?

Background

TIPS is offered for severe portal hypertension complicated by refractory ascites or recurrent variceal bleeding.

Procedure

Under general anesthesia, a catheter via the jugular vein traverses the liver parenchyma to create a channel between hepatic and portal veins, maintained by a covered stent. Duration: 1-3 hours.

Risks

Hepatic encephalopathy (20-30%), liver failure, intrahepatic bleeding, TIPS dysfunction.

Recovery

3-5 day hospitalization. Regular Doppler follow-up. Encephalopathy monitoring.

Practical information

General anesthesia. Hospital stay: two to three nights.
